Dussehra Decor Ideas

Dussehra décor doesn’t need to compete with Diwali’s lights. The best Dussehra decoration ideas draw on the day’s own symbols: the victory of Rama, the Shami tree, the tools and books worshipped in Ayudha puja, and the jaware sprouted during Navratri. With Dussehra 2026 on Tuesday, 20 October, most of these can be set up on the Sunday or Monday before, and several can carry straight on to Diwali on 8 November. Here are nine ideas.

1. A Marigold and Mango-Leaf Toran

The toran or bandhanwar over the main door is the simplest way to mark a festival. Orange and yellow marigolds strung with fresh mango leaves are traditional and inexpensive. Add a second strand of Ashoka or banana leaves if you want more green.

2. A Shami or Apta Leaf Display

Shami leaves are worshipped on Dussehra, and in Maharashtra and Karnataka Apta leaves are exchanged as “gold”. Place a few sprigs in a brass or copper vessel near the entrance, with a small bowl of extra leaves for guests to take. It’s décor and ritual in one. Read about the custom in 7 Dussehra traditions you’re probably skipping.

3. Bow-and-Arrow Rangoli

Rama’s bow is the most recognisable symbol of Dussehra. A rangoli built around a drawn bow and arrow, framed by lotus petals or a circle of diyas, is easy to make with coloured powder, flower petals or rice. For a quicker version, outline the design with chalk and fill it with marigold petals.

4. An Ayudha Puja Corner

Instead of hiding the things you work with, celebrate them. Clean a shelf or table, lay a red or yellow cloth, and arrange books, a laptop, musical instruments or tools with a tilak, flowers and a small lamp. In South India this display is central to Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja; elsewhere it makes a striking, personal centrepiece. More in our piece on Ayudha Pooja.

5. The Navratri Kalash and Jaware as a Centrepiece

If you sowed jaware (barley shoots) beside the kalash at the start of Navratri, they’ll be tall and green by Dussehra. Before they are offered, worn behind the ear, or immersed, let them take centre stage on the dining table or puja shelf for one last day. Their fresh green looks beautiful against brass and marigold.

6. A Paper Ravana Craft (Not for Burning)

Children love making a small Ravana from cardboard tubes and paper plates. Display it near the door through the day, then “defeat” it with a paper arrow in the evening. Please don’t burn it indoors. Our Dussehra guide for kids has the steps.

7. Red-and-White for Bengal’s Vijaya Dashami

In Bengal, Vijayadashami brings the farewell to the Goddess and Sindoor Khela. A red-bordered white saree or fabric draped as a backdrop, with red hibiscus and a few conch-shell accents, gives your home a nod to the eastern side of the festival.

8. Brass Lamps and Diyas

Bring out the brass lamps and clay diyas a little before Diwali. A row of diyas along the entrance or balcony on Dussehra evening links the two festivals, as Diwali, in the North Indian telling, celebrates Rama’s return after the victory you’re marking today. Keep lamps on metal or stone plates and away from curtains.

9. Saffron Flags and Fabric Pennants

Small saffron or red cloth pennants strung across a balcony or courtyard bring a sense of procession and victory without any plastic. Make them from leftover fabric, and reuse them for other festivals through the year.

From Dussehra to Diwali

With Diwali on 8 November 2026, just 19 days after Dussehra, plan your décor in two layers. Keep the toran fabric, lamps, pennants and rangoli stencils for Diwali, and refresh only the flowers. That saves money and effort, and keeps the festive season feeling continuous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which flowers are used for Dussehra decoration?

Marigolds are the most common, along with mango leaves for torans. Red hibiscus is popular in Bengal, and Shami or Apta leaves are used across western and southern India.

What rangoli design suits Dussehra?

A bow and arrow representing Rama, lotus motifs, or a circle of diyas all suit the day’s theme of victory.

When should I decorate for Dussehra 2026?

Since Dussehra falls on Tuesday, 20 October, set up durable décor on the weekend before and add fresh flowers on the morning of the festival.

Can I reuse Dussehra decorations for Diwali?

Yes. Fabric torans, lamps, pennants and rangoli stencils all carry over well to Diwali on 8 November 2026.
