dussehra for kids

Children remember Dussehra for the giant Ravana going up in flames, but with a little planning the day can give them much more: a story they understand, a ritual they take part in, and a craft they made with their own hands. This guide to Dussehra for kids covers how to tell the story simply, how to keep them safe at the Ravan Dahan, and easy activities for Tuesday, 20 October 2026. Since Dussehra falls on a school day for many families this year, most ideas fit into an evening or the weekend before.

Tell the Story Before the Fire

The effigies make more sense when children know who Ravana was. A version for younger kids can be told in five minutes: Prince Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana go to live in the forest. Ravana, the powerful king of Lanka, carries Sita away. Rama, with Lakshmana, Hanuman and an army of vanaras, builds a bridge to Lanka and wins her back. Dussehra celebrates the day good won.

Older children can handle more nuance. Ravana was also a learned scholar and a devoted worshipper of Shiva; it was his pride and his refusal to return Sita that led to his downfall. That makes for a good conversation about how talent without humility goes wrong. Our article on why Ravana was both a villain and a devotee gives you the background.

Don’t forget the second story of the day: the Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura, which ends the nine nights of Navratri. Children who joined in the Navratri celebrations will enjoy seeing how the two festivals connect.

The “Ten Heads” Game

A popular interpretation reads Ravana’s ten heads as ten human failings, such as anger, greed, pride, jealousy, laziness and selfishness. It’s a teaching device rather than a fixed scriptural list, and that makes it perfect for children. Draw a simple Ravana with ten blank faces. Ask each child to write or draw one habit they’d like to let go of on a face, then fold or tear those faces off together. It turns the symbolism of Ravan Dahan into something they can actually do.

Dussehra for Kids: Easy Crafts

A mini Ravana from recycled materials

Use a cardboard tube for the body, paper plates for the heads and coloured paper for the crown and moustache. Please don’t set it on fire at home. Instead, “defeat” it by knocking it down with a paper arrow, which is safer and just as satisfying.

Rama’s bow and arrows

A bent bamboo strip or a thick cardboard arc with string makes a simple bow; rolled paper with a felt tip makes harmless arrows. Set up a target and let the children practise.

Shami leaf cards

In Maharashtra and Karnataka, people exchange Shami or Apta leaves as “gold” on Dussehra. Kids can paste a real or paper leaf on a card and write a wish for a grandparent. Read about the custom in 7 Dussehra traditions you’re probably skipping.

Let Them Take Part in the Puja

Give each child one job. They can place flowers on books and school bags for a simple book puja, a gentle version of Ayudha puja; help draw the rice lotus for Aparajita puja in the afternoon; or tuck a few green jaware shoots from Navratri behind elders’ ears. In Kerala and parts of South India, Vijayadashami is also the day of Vidyarambham, when very young children write their first letters. Even older children can mark the day by starting a new book or a new skill.

Keeping Kids Safe at Ravan Dahan

Ramlila grounds can be extremely crowded, and the effigies are usually packed with firecrackers. A few precautions go a long way:

  • Arrive early and stand well back from the barricades, upwind of the smoke if you can.
  • Put a card with your phone number in each child’s pocket, and agree on a meeting point.
  • Carry ear defenders or soft earplugs for toddlers and sensitive children; the bursts are loud.
  • Dress them in cotton rather than synthetic fabric, and avoid loose dupattas near sparks.
  • Leave before the final rush if the crowd feels tight. Smaller neighbourhood Ravan Dahans are often a better choice for young children.

Make It Delicious

Food is memory. In Gujarat, Dussehra means fafda and jalebi; in many North Indian homes, it’s a festive meal after the fasts of Navratri end. Let children help shape something simple, such as laddoos or a fruit chaat, and serve it to grandparents first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I explain Dussehra to a young child?

Keep it short: Rama rescued Sita from Ravana, and Dussehra celebrates good winning over bad. Add that the Goddess Durga also won her battle on this day.

Is Ravan Dahan safe for toddlers?

It can be, with distance, ear protection and a smaller venue. Large grounds with dense crowds are better suited to older children.

When is Dussehra 2026?

Dussehra falls on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. See our Dussehra 2026 guide for muhurat timings.

What does Ravana’s ten heads mean?

In the Ramayana, Ravana is described as ten-headed (Dashanana). A popular modern interpretation reads the heads as ten human weaknesses to be overcome.

The Part They’ll Remember

Years from now, your children may not recall the exact height of the effigy. They’ll remember the story you told them, the bow they made and the grandparent who blessed them with a Shami leaf. Give them a role, and Dussehra becomes their festival too.
