The holy month of Sawan (also known as Shravan) will begin on Thursday, July 11, 2025, and will conclude on Saturday, August 9, 2025. This entire month is considered highly sacred in the Hindu tradition and is especially associated with Lord Shiva.
Why is Sawan Considered Special?
Sawan holds great spiritual significance. According to Hindu mythology, during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) by the gods and demons, a powerful poison called Halahala emerged. To protect creation, Lord Shiva consumed this poison. His throat turned blue, earning him the name Neelkanth.
To cool down the intense effect of the poison, devotees began offering water, milk, and belpatra (Bael leaves) to Lord Shiva, especially during Sawan, the month when this event is believed to have taken place.
