ॐ (AUM)

Mantra

ॐ (AUM)

Vedic

Transliteration (IAST)

The character “o” represents the sound that begins with “a” and ends with “u”. The ṃ (anusvāra) represents the nasal sound “m”.

Meaning (English)

The word ॐ (AUM) is known as the Pranava Mantra, which means “that which sustains life.” It is also called the Udgitha or the Shabda Brahman (Sound Absolute).
The sound “A” (अ) represents creation and is connected with Lord Brahma, the creator.

The sound “U” (उ) represents preservation and is associated with Lord Vishnu, the sustainer.

The sound “M” (म) represents dissolution and symbolizes Lord Shiva, the destroyer.
